Saxophones are a wildly unique instrument with incredible sound and tone. Famous musicians like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins are recognized for their gifted saxophone playing. The saxophone is such a unique instrument because of its history and the family of instruments it belongs too. Saxophone lessons would be a great way to learn more about this eccentric instrument and become familiar with its sound and parts. At Fundamental Music Instruction, we are excited to offer saxophone lessons for beginners to advanced, and also a wide variety of other instruments, so children and adults have the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument they love in the comfort of their home.

The Dynamic History of the Saxophone

As the only instrument ever to be invented by a single individual, Adolphe Sax was the mastermind behind creating the saxophone instrument. Adolphe Sax was born in Belgium in 1814 and was a versatile musician playing many different wind instruments. Sax wanted to create an instrument that embodied the soloist and lyrical nature of a woodwind but would be better heard in the brass instrument family. He patented his invention, the saxophone, in Paris in 1846.

As the only brass woodwind instrument, the saxophone has always been made of brass. But because the instrument generates sound with a single reed, it is classified as a woodwind. The only other instrument that is a metallic woodwind is the flute, but originally flutes were made entirely out of wood, and sometimes can be found made this way today.

Adolphe Sax knew the saxophone would fit into a wide variety of ensembles, and this is why he made them in a range of sizes. The sopranino was a high range saxophone, and the contrabass was in the low range. Sax even invented the saxhorn, a brass instrument similar to today’s flugelhorn and alto horn. Out of the fourteen different types of saxophones Adolphe Sax invented, only four are mainly used today – the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones.

Saxophone Lessons Can Help You Bring Unique Personality to Any Ensemble

The saxophone was created to bridge the gap between the brass and woodwind instruments and plays an integral part in creating tonal balance in music. The saxophone can blend differing tones and support high and low woodwind sounds. The dynamic sounds of the saxophone act as a middle voice in a large ensemble of instruments. Musicians love playing the saxophone because it is an emotional instrument that adds personality to music.
